Where It All Began
Black Brook Shop started in 2007 as a hobby — a quiet creative outlet that quickly turned into something I couldn't stop doing. I discovered I loved making jewelry, and I haven't looked back since.
The name comes from a real place: Black Brook is a brook that runs near my home. It's where I walk, where I garden, and where I find the inspiration for almost everything I make. If you were to wander along its banks, you'd see butterflies landing on wildflowers, dragonflies skimming the water, bumblebees working through the garden, acorns and pine cones scattered along the path. That's Black Brook Shop.
From Craft Fairs to Your Doorstep
I opened my Etsy shop in 2009, but long before that I was packing up my jewelry and heading to craft shows and fairs — something I did every year from 2007 through 2018. I loved meeting people face to face, watching someone pick up a piece and light up. When the world shifted in 2020 and live events stopped, I shifted too, bringing that same handmade spirit fully online.
Why I Make What I Make
I'm drawn to natural materials — gemstones, sterling silver, brass, Hill Tribe silver — because they feel honest. There's nothing artificial about a piece of labradorite or a strand of freshwater pearls. I'm not one for new age claims about healing crystals or the metaphysical power of stones. I just think they're beautiful, and I believe that beauty itself has value.
My inspiration comes from the same place as my name: the garden, the brook, the seasons. I grow both vegetables and flowers, and nature themes run through everything I create — butterflies, dragonflies, bumblebees, botanicals, the quiet details most people walk past without noticing.
Making Something Necessary Beautiful
One of the things I'm most proud of is my line of beaded stretch watch bands and medical ID bands. So many people have to wear a medical alert bracelet or a watch every single day — and most of the options out there are purely functional. I wanted to change that. When the beads are pretty, wearing something you have to wear becomes something you actually want to wear. That feels like a small but meaningful thing.
The Heart of It
Creating is therapeutic for me. It always has been. But what makes it more than just a hobby is knowing that something I made with my hands ends up with someone who loves it — whether it's a gift for a friend, a treat for themselves, or a bracelet that makes a hard medical reality a little more bearable.
